Irish company start-ups remain strong in 2017
Between 1st January and 25th August this year, we have seen the formation of 14,766 new Irish companies - an average of 62 start-ups per day - an increase of 8.6% on the same period in 2016 (13,600).
Professional services remains the most popular industry for Irish start-ups with almost one in five (2,863) operating in this sector - these companies would typically be associated with Accounting, Admin, Marketing, Engineering, HR, Investigation, Legal Services etc.
The finance and social & personal sectors were the second and third most popular industries for start-ups and accounted for 2,143 and 1,725 new companies respectively. Construction and wholesale & retail round out the top 5 most popular industries with 1,490 and 1,367 start-ups respectively.
Approximately 45% of this year's start-ups are based in Dublin with just over another 10% based in Cork. Galway, Kildare and Meath are next on the list and account for almost 12% of new companies between them.
